St. Helena Schooner Adventure - Mackinaw City, Michigan
You will board the majestic Highlander Sea in Mackinaw City on the
morning of July 17th, setting sail out of the harbor at 9:00 a.m.
Depending on wind conditions; we plan on heading east into the Round
Island Passage for a view of Mackinac Island and the Round Island
lighthouse before turning west for St. Helena. After passing Old
Mackinac Point lighthouse on your port side, the vessel will pass
beneath the mighty Mackinac Bridge for a once in a lifetime opportunity
to photograph the bridge through the schooners rigging. The schooner
will then take a leisurely sail through the Straits to St. Helena
Island, where she will anchor in the island’s north bay, site of what
was once a bustling fishing village in the mid 1800’s where many a
schooner laid anchor to pick up barrels of fish. After enjoying lunch
aboard the schooner, you will board dinghies, where the keepers at the
St. Helena Island light station will take you on a short trip to the
historic 1873 lighthouse. After arriving at the lighthouse dock, you
will then have the entire afternoon to yourself to explore the
beautifully restored lighthouse, roam the island’s shores and watch
passing freighters as they rumble their way through the Straits. After
dinner at the lighthouse, you will gather with your fellow sailors and
lighthouse keepers around a roaring campfire on the beach in front of
the lighthouse, where you will be able to enjoy a once in a lifetime
view of the distant Mackinac Bridge along with some of the most
star-filled skies you will find anywhere. Filled with the warmth of the
fire and fine companionship, you will again take a short dinghy ride
back to your berth aboard the Highlander Sea, where you will be gently
rocked to sleep in the quiet shelter of the bay. The following morning,
you will return to the lighthouse for a hearty home-cooked breakfast.
After watching daytime spread its warming grip across the island, you
will take your final dinghy ride back to the Highlander Sea, and set
sail back to Mackinaw City, where you will arrive at approximately 2:00
PM on Friday July 18, your mind filled with fond memories of an earlier
time that you will carry with you for the rest of your life. A second
excursion with the same itinerary and schedule will be held on Saturday
July 19 and Sunday July 20. The cost for each of these two-day exclusive
excursions will be $650.00 per person, and participation for each will
be limited to ten people. Participants must be both agile and energetic,
as the excursions will entail climbing ladders, hauling sails, climbing
in and out of dinghies at the schooner and lighthouse dock, climbing the
lighthouse tower and walking the island’s unimproved stone beaches.

Great Lakes Maritime Education Workshop - St. Helena Island, Michigan
Step back in time to a simpler life on uninhabited St. Helena Island.
Participants will be immersed in the life and times of Great Lakes
lighthouse keepers, including history, culture and songs. Educators and
youth leaders will sleep in the lighthouse bedrooms, cook with each
other in the summer kitchen, and keep watch on the lantern deck as
lighthouse families did 100 years ago. Activity classes, all based on
the Michigan State Standards, offer the participant a means to integrate
real world Great Lakes concepts into their classrooms. Some examples of
these activities include topographical mapping, lens/prism and sound
technology, use of primary reference materials, storytelling, journal
entry and decision making, to name just a few. Full cost to put on each
workshop is $800 per person, however, the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers
Association will subsidize the majority of the cost, including boat
transportation out of Mackinaw City, Michigan, to and from St. Helena
Island. The workshop fee is $275.00, which partially pays for
educational materials, food, housing at the 1873 historic light station,
and a personal membership in the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers
Association. Placement in the workshop will be on a first come-first
served basis. The workshop size is limited to 12 to 15 participants. You
