Mackinaw City Information & Overview
Mackinaw City is a Northern Michigan village and resort community located in Emmet and Cheboygan counties at the southern end of the Mackinac Bridge. When you're in Mackinaw City, you are literally at the "tip of the mit." Mackinaw City, along with St. Ignace across the straits, is a base for the Mackinac Island ferries, one of the most popular ways to reach Mackinac Island.
Named the top tourist destination in the State of Michigan, Mackinaw City plays host to over 1.2 million visitors each year. Visitors enjoy the village's many exciting attractions, marinas, large number of hotels and other recreational facilities along the Straits of Mackinac. With beautiful scenic views of the Great Lakes and the Mackinac Bridge, Mackinaw City is a great place to live, work, and visit. Cinema, restaurants, historical tours, shopping, and famous Mackinaw fudge, not to mention the spectacular natural setting, are all reasons why people return year after year.
Mackinaw City has preserved it's lakefront for all to use with the construction of Conklin Heritage Park. Free evening concerts at the park's amphitheatre can be enjoyed throughout the summer season. Evening entertainment include's Mackinaw's popular Jack Pine Lumberjack Show.
History
Historically, the village of Mackinaw City is known as the crossroads of the Great Lakes. Native American tribes used Mackinaw City as a gathering place centuries before the European trappers and traders built Fort Michilimackinac. The fort became a focal point of the fur trade in the 1600s and 1700s. Today, the fort has been authentically reconstructed on it's original site. You can watch archeologists discover remnants of the past pre-revolutionary war inside the walls of the fort.
The Mackinac Bridge
The Mackinac Bridge (pronounced "Mackinaw"), one of Michigan's most recognizable landmarks, looms over Mackinaw City. The bridge as a backdrop helps create an ever changing and beautiful canvas of colors in the fall, summer and winter, morning and evening light. Almost as imposing as the bridge are the two massive wind turbines that help power Mackinaw City using nothing but the Great Lakes breezes.
