Charlevoix Historical Society - Statement of Purpose
The Charlevoix Historical Society is dedicated to the acquisition, preservation, and protection of objects and places of historical value, to the dissemination of information regarding these objects and places, and to the bringing together of all peoples interested in the history of the Charlevoix area.

The Society is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that maintains two historic buildings, and provides programs and exhibits of a historical nature for the membership, community and local schools.

Each year, scholarships are awarded to Charlevoix High School graduating seniors who provide outstanding papers or projects pertaining to local history.

Patron sponsorships, donations, membership dues, grant money and user fees provide the funds to carry out these activities.

Harsha House Museum - 103 State Street
The house was built in 1891 by Charlevoix businessman and community leader Horace S. Harsha. His granddaughter Ann Harsha donated the Victorian-style house to the Charlevoix Historical Society in 1978 to be used as a museum.

The limited edition first Bob Miles’ Charlevoix photo/history book was published by the Society for the nation’s bicentennial in 1976. Proceeds from this publication provided funds to build on an addition to the Harsha House to exhibit and store the growing collection of photos and artifacts donated by people interested in the preservation of our history. Bob Miles’ Charlevoix II, a non-limited, updated and expanded volume, was published in September, 2002 and is currently available at the Harsha House or via mail order.

Railroad Depot - Depot Beach Area
Mr. & Mrs. Robert Pew donated the railroad station to the Society in June 1992 on the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the first passenger train in Charlevoix.

The Depot building is being restored with the help of fundraisers, grants and generous donations from community and summer residents. The Charlevoix Area Garden Clubs are developing a Heritage Garden on the grounds based on historic garden principles and utilizing local cuttings wherever possible.

Today the Depot building is used as a meeting place for history programs, exhibits, social events, and other activities sponsored by the Society.
