Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall… DeTour area has it all!

Waterfronts are abundant
Lake Huron, the St. Mary’s River, Raber Bay and Caribou Lake are very popular for boaters, fishermen, ship watchers, resort guests and beach goers. Each with its own point of interest.

Fishing is one of the main reasons many visitors come to the DeTour Area. The perch run in the early spring, with smelt an annual event around the middle of April, and Pike and Walleye opening May 15th.

Caribou Lake is popular for Walleye, Small-mouth Bass, Pike and Perch.

Herring run in the St. Mary’s River in late June - early July, with Salmon action startin gin late May through October. Ice fishing is very popular in all the areas. Pike, Walleye and Perch are the favorites thru the ice. There is even an ice fishing tournament on Caribou Lake every winter.

Our annual Salmon Derby runs the last Saturday in July thru the first Saturday in August. Dozens of prizes are awarded including cash & gifts donated by our local businesses. It’s fun and rewarding for anglers of all ages, there is even a kids division.

DeTour Reef Light
DeTour Village marks the southern entrance to DeTour Passage and the St. Mary’s River, the connecting route between Lake Huron and Lake Superior. There has been a light at DeTour, located on the mainland, since 1848. It was rebuilt in 1861 with the same design as the Manitou Island Light and Whitefish Point light on Lake Superior. Since then, the light has been refitted several times. In the early 1900’s, the Lighthouse Board proposed to make the DeTour light more distinctive and recognizable by installing a new Fresnel lens that would produce a fixed light varied by a flash which was installed in 1908. The lens, along with the lantern room in which it was placed, are the only parts of the onshore light station that were retained when the present structure was built in 1931. The DeTour Reef Light Preservation Society has completed its restoration project and now offers tours and overnight stays at the offshore lighthouse. Email for info.

For your snowmobiling pleasure, without the hassle of over crowded trails, try the DeTour area as your home post. We have many miles of groomed trails, connecting you to St. Ignace, Cedarville, Drummond Island, Tahquamenon falls and the south shores of the Canadian Islands.

The DeTour Harbor of Refuge and Marina is located in downtown DeTour and is within wakling distance to shopping restaurants, a Laundromat, banks, churches, a grocery, sport shop and the post office. The marina features 80 slips from 30’ to 100’ with 30 to 50 amp service, fuel available, restrooms & showers, pump-out, water, ice, computer modem availability, 2 launch ramps and much more. The boat yard does repairs on all types of boats plus offers storage for 50-75 boats and launching with a 20 ton open end marine travel lift.

The view of the Great Lakes Freighters is excellent from our shores. Most of the ships come through carrying grain, coal or iron ore.

Occasionally you may even get a glimpse of an ocean going freighter.

The DeTour Passage Underwater Preserve features a variety of dive sites. Near the marina, divers can find the remains of several old freighters, dock ruins and a variety of small artifacts left from fueling operations.

Other Attractions
DeTour Botanical Gardens are a source of community pride, they provide a rare solitary gem contained in a semi-wilderness setting where a visitor can sit a spell and enjoy the sights and sounds of the lower St. Mary’s River. Summer gardens are filled with annuals and perennials with the rose gardens holding some 30 different varieties. Find a bench placed along the shoreline to sit, rest and sooth the soul. The only botanical gardens north of Midland.

DeTour Passage Historical Museum is located next to the Ferry Dock on Elizabeth Street. Exhibits include clothing, pictures, record books and Native American Artifacts. The marine display features the Fresnel lens from the DeTour Reef Light and many other artifacts. Open Memorial Day to Labor Day. Admission is FREE!! Donations are accepted.

DeTour Village Scenic Highway M-134 -
The route to DeTour from the Mackinac Bridge is North on I-75 to East M-134 Scenic Highway. Situated at the Straits of DeTour Passage where the magnificent St. Mary’s River joins Lake Huron, DeTour was named hundreds of years ago by the French voyagers as the “turning point” to Mackinac. DeTour was a fishing community and firewood fueling station known to the Indians and early settlers long before Detroit or Chicago existed.

Today it is known as the "Gateway to the North Channel," and as a vacation paradise to all fisherman, boaters, boat watchers, photographers, hunters, snowmobilers, cross country skiers, or those who just like to relax in a peaceful rustic setting. DeTour is also a favored spot for rock hounds of the pudding stone which can be found almost anywhere in the area.
