Mackinac Island

Fort Mackinac
Open May 3 to October 7, 2012

Inside the stately stone walls it’s a different time. The cannon blasts, the rifles fire, the soldiers march and history comes alive. The oldest building in Michigan and 13 other historical structures boast exhibits explaining everything from military training and battles to medical treatments to family life within the fort.

Special programs for both kids and adults, and events commemorating the bicentennial of the War of 1812 make Fort Mackinac on Mackinac Island a must-see attraction.

Located within the fort, the Tea Room provides a dining experience with spectacular views over Marquette Park as freighters and ferries pass by all season long.

Historic Downtown Mackinac

Explore hearth cooking, blacksmithing and groundbreaking medical discovery at Historic Downtown Mackinac, included with admission to Fort Mackinac or the Richard and Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum.

The Richard and Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum
Open May 11 to October 7, 2012

Nowhere else does such a rare and exceptional collection of Mackinac-related art and photography come together to tell Mackinac’s story.

Children interested in creating their own art will enjoy the Kids’ Art Studio on the first floor between June 9 and August 18. Skilled artists on staff can help teach technique or step back and let the creativity flow through paint, pencils, and crayons.

2012 Special Exhibit: Mackinac’s Grand Hotel
In commemoration of the hotel’s 125th anniversary, this exhibit explores the rich history of the world’s largest summer resort hotel.

Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park

Discover the Past. Discover Nature. Discover the Adventure!

At Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park visitors can witness the power of the creek harnessed to cut timber into lumber at one of the oldest industrial sites on the Upper Great Lakes. Additionally, visitors can soar like an eagle on the original Straits of Mackinac zip line and trek through the treetops on the forest canopy bridge as part of the Adventure Tour.

Colonial Michilimackinac

Treasures from the past come to life at this 18th-century fort and fur trading village. Reconstructed based on historic maps and more than 50 years of archaeological excavations that continue today, Colonial Michilimackinac offers a one-of-a-kind experience from cannon and musket firings to hearth cooking and crafts.

Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse
Open May 5 to October 7, 2012

A point in the storm and a guiding beacon since 1889, Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse helped passing ships navigate through the treacherous waters of the Straits of Mackinac. There’s just as much to see from the top of the tower as inside the original buildings. Authentically restored quarters and exhibits, including the original lens and an audiovisual program, Shipwrecks of the Straits, make this "Castle of the Straits" a true gem of the Great Lakes.

Mackinac Island

Fort Mackinac
On a southern bluff overlooking the majestic Straits of Mackinac is the stately stone palisade of Fort Mackinac. Inside the fort walls are 14 original buildings filled with interactive displays and period furnishings. Hear bugle music, rifle fire, and a cannon blast. Dance to a 19th-century tune. Drill with soldiers. Watch a court martial reenactment. Play Victorian children's games. In this 1880's-era fort, you create a history that's all your own.

Historic Downtown (Mackinac Island)
Step inside these five Historic Downtown buildings and experience a time that isn't so long gone. Smell stew cooking over an open hearth, hear the clanging of a blacksmith's hammer, and visit a 19th-century church.

The Richard & Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum
Open mid-summer 2010, this new art museum, located at the Indian Dormitory on Mackinac Island, centers on fine and decorative arts inspired by Mackinac Island through the ages. View a prehistoric pottery rim fragment excavated near the museum, and marvel at the many historic oil paintings and sketches of Mackinac Island created during the era of fur trade and Native American encampments. Filled with interactive displays and beautiful exhibitions, this museum serves as an inspiration for creativity.

Colonial Michilimackinac

At this 1770s-era fort and fur trading village, every day is kids' day. Children can immerse themselves in special kids' programs. Drill in the King's Army. Play colonial games. Lift a fur bale or zoom down a slide in the Kids' Rendezvous Interpretive Playground. Be a voyageur in a reenactment. Witness an ongoing archaeological dig. With 13 authentically reconstructed buildings, interactive display, and demonstrations such as open hearth cooking, Native American crafts, and cannon and rifle firings, the entire family will be engaged.

The Native American Program at Colonial Michilimackinac includes the "Pe-quod-e-nonge" encampment where the Odawa and Ojibway gathered in the summertime at this great Lakes fur trading center. Native culture, crafts and foodways, and the relationship between Native Americans and the French and British are represented.

Colonial Michilimackinac hosts a variety of children's programs and activities. Experience life as it was for colonial children in the 1770s. Wash laundry, march in uniform, and participate in games. Gain a sense of what the summer season was like at this frontier fur trading community.

Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse

With its impressive brick walls and large tower, this lighthouse has inspired generations. Climb the tower stairs and let the breathtaking view inspire you. Interact with the nighttime navigation exhibit. See the original Fresnel lens, lighthouse keepers' uniforms, and other artifacts. Explore the haunting world of shipwrecks with the Straits of Mackinac shipwreck audiovisual program.

Entrance can be gained to most stores without paying admission.
