Newberry History

The third largest wildfire in Michigan's history was the Sleeper Lake Fire on August 2, 2007 near Sleeper Lake. By August 5, 2007, the Sleeper Lake Fire had burned nearly 12,000 acres of land and caused residents to evacuate. By August 18, 2007, the fire had burned around 18,500 acres. Firefighting efforts were coordinated from the Village of Newberry.
